Watford F.C. are once again enjoying a spell in the Premier League – offering top flight football just a short train ride from the centre of London.
The Hornets have spent most of the past 30 years in the second tier of English football with occasional forays into the Premier League.
However the arrival of new owners, the Pozzo family, in 2012 signalled a big change and promotion to the top flight followed three years later.

Watford’s first halcyon period was prompted by the arrival in the 1970s of rock star Elton John as chairman. He appointed Graham Taylor as manager with Watford in the fourth tier and in five seasons the club surged through the divisions to secure top flight status for the first time ever in 1982.
The dream continued as they finished runners-up to Liverpool in their first season, enjoyed a European adventure as a result and then reached their first FA Cup final. Alongside this they pioneered family football, giving the club a ‘friendly’ tag they still enjoy today.
Taylor left, going on to manage England, but returned in the late 1990s and performed a second miracle, taking the club back to the Premier League.
Vicarage Road Stadium, tucked away between houses, allotments and a hospital, first opened in 1922 but has been completely rebuilt in the past 30 years.
The original main stand was demolished a few years ago and in its place rose a modern all-seater stand, named in honour of Sir Elton John. An inscription runs along the back of the stand, the lyrics of his most famous hit, Your Song.
Opposite is the two tier Graham Taylor Stand with distinctive arched roof, while single tier stands at each end generate the atmosphere.
