Matches take place throughout the week in summer and due to the high number of fixtures – each club plays 162 games in the regular season, stretching from April to the beginning of October – the MLB has the highest season attendance of any sports league on the globe.
The winners of the eight divisions, plus wild cards, go into the end of season play-offs. The winners of the National League and American League then go head to head in the best-of-seven World Series.
The biggest club, with a record 27 World Series, are the New York Yankees who play at the impressive Yankee Stadium in the city’s Bronx district. Their rivalry in the AL East Division with the Boston Red Sox is arguably one of the fiercest in world sport – dating back to when the Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees. It was 86 long years until Boston won the World Series again, and it became known as the Curse of the Bambino.
The Red Sox call iconic Fenway Park in Boston their home – holding 37,000 it’s one of the smallest grounds in MLB, it’s also the oldest and was famously sold out for 820 games in a row between 2003 and 2013 – a world record.
All the major cities have franchises with passionate supporters and some even have two – the Mets challenge the Yankees in New York, while Chicago has the White Sox and the Cubs, and Los Angeles hosts the Angels and the Dodgers.
