In 2016 West Ham called time on their long-time home, the Boleyn Ground – also known as Upton Park, the part of London where it was located. The ground was famous as a passionate venue with fans right on top of the action.
They moved just a couple of miles to Stratford and the Olympic Stadium. Originally constructed for the 2012 London Olympics, it initially held 75,000 and was the centrepiece of the Olympic Park. After the Games it was redeveloped so it could be suitable for hosting football and athletics as well as other sports and music concerts, and West Ham were confirmed as the new tenants. Renamed the London Stadium, it now has a capacity of 57,000 for football matches.
West Ham have never won the league but are regulars in the top division, and perhaps their finest era came in 1966 when an England team led by West Ham’s Bobby Moore won the World Cup – and United’s Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters scored the goals in the final. It prompted the much-used claim that West Ham won the World Cup!
The previous year came their sole European success, winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup after beating 1860 Munich at Wembley.
The club became known for their attractive style of play and have been proud of their nickname as The Academy of Football.
Recent times have seen occasional relegations – followed by immediate promotions back to the Premier League – and in 2006 they were involved in a classic FA Cup final, losing to Liverpool on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
